Mammoth Cave National Park

Mammoth Cave National Park - July 26 through 28 (2022)

Mammoth Cave National Park’s 52,000 acres was great fun even with the rainy weather we experienced for much of the trip. There are a myriad outdoor activities: kayaking and canoeing along the Green and Nolin rivers; biking, hiking and horseback riding through forested terrain.

Our first day, we put in the Green River for a 7.5 mile canoe trip along the easy flowing River. We took out just before reaching the ferry crossing. It was a super easy trip along the river, and since we went on a rainy Monday, we had the river to ourselves. There was a turtle sighting every 10 minutes. The whole setting was so peaceful and beautiful. Highly recommend this adventure for anyone visiting the Park.

After checking into to our Cottage accommodations, we made a stop at the Visitor’s Center. Nicely organized with many Rangers to answer questions about the Park and the Cave. After we got our passport books stamped we took a short hike along the Sinkhole Trail and the Sunset Point Trail. Yes, the sun was starting to set and it was a cool place to be.

Tuesday was a true cave day. With over 400 documented miles of tunnels and passageways there are many different cave tours. We chose the Domes and Dripstones Tour. Many cool pictures downloaded to the gallery below. The tour took about 2 hours in total and was fun. There were some tight spots and would not be a good place to be if you get claustrophobic (Denise).

The 2nd half of Tuesday was dedicated to hiking. We knocked out the Dixon Cave Trail, Echo River Springs Trail, the Green River Bluffs Trail, the River Styx Spring Trail and the Two Springs Trail. Trails were well marked and good path for hiking. Very hilly and we both got in great workouts as an added benefit.

All in all a great trip and one of the better National Parks so far. Pictures posted.
